Alcides Nieto Patiño Velodrome
Located in front of the Cañaveralejo River and behind of the Cañaveralejo Bullfighting Ring, the Alcides Nieto Patiño Velodrome stands colossal and proudly as a concrete structure. It is considered the best in South America and one of the most impressive worldwide.
It was built in 1970 and opened in 1971 for the sixth edition of the Pan-American Games in Cali, designed by the engineer Xavier Kurgan. The velodrome’s initial wooden folder was of African origin. In 1995, it was remodeled for the Pacific Games and a track was built with wood from the Choco state in Colombia. However, on July 10 of 2011, the cover unfortunately collapsed and destroyed the passing wooden track.
In 2007, work was carried out in the track alignment, with plumbing and drainage repairs, as well as bleachers and booth maintenance, while re-installing the roof, making it a world-class sports arena. The velodrome reopened under the Parapanamerican Open Cycling Championships for people with disabilities, held between 8th and 18th November 2007.
It currently holds 7.650 people and is recognized around the world as one of the best and most complete professional cycling scenarios, to the point that the city of Cali figured on the agenda of the International Cycling Union (UCI) as one of the seven global stop tracks that were conducted.
In 2008, the Colombian Cycling Federation for the management of the Valle del Cauca’s Cycling League was approved and obtained in order to become a stopping point in the World Cup. In 2010, the world experienced, for the tenth time, one of the largest sporting events in Colombia, the stopping point of the Track Cycling World Cup, qualifying for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
This temple of speed meets a modern track of 250 meters long and 8 meters wide, an inclination of 45 degrees in the risers. The structure and rolling surface is made in Abarco Chocoano wood (from the Colombian Pacific Coast), which allows achieving high speeds and high accelerations of athletic competition.
This facility is located at the exclusive service of the Vallecaucana Cycling League and the Track Cycling clubs in the region.
For this year, the Alcides Nieto Patiño Velodrome will receive Artistic Roller Sports competitions in the Cali World Games 2013.

Lighting System
201 powerful Metal Halide type bulbs were placed. Generating 1.000 Lumax lighting which is the requirement the UCI demands for their homologated and final endorsement. The lights are distributed on the Track, Public Stands and general areas; they were also place on the top, for an absolute vertical lighting system, except 24 lights that were placed on the roof.
• 62 light bulbs of 400 Watts at the public stands.
• 80 light bulbs, 18 of them are 1500 watts, for the Track.
• 24 light bulbs of 400 watts of power for the roof.
• 35 GP incandescent light bulbs of 500 watts of power place in general areas and emergency exits.
